These J.L. Coombs moccasins were once favored by loggers and hunters working in the Maine forests, who discarded the stiff European-made wooden shoes that were common at the time.
Only vintage and deadstock (unused items from that era) can be found on the market, and they are still sought after by American casual fans and vintage collectors worldwide as "the phantom moccasins."
This recreation faithfully reproduces the iconic ring moccasins, made by American craftsmen.
It is entirely handmade using a true moccasin stitch, with 5mm cowhide leather, which is difficult to obtain today.

"J.L. COOMBS" was founded in Maine, USA, in 1830. It is known as a pioneering brand that was the first in the world to commercialize the moccasin shoe manufacturing method traditionally used by Native Americans.
They used extremely thick elk leather or cowhide, approximately 5mm thick, and all processes, from cutting and hammering to sewing, were finished by skilled craftsmen by hand.
Adhering to traditional manufacturing methods, there is even an anecdote that bear oil was once soaked into the leather to enhance its waterproofing, boasting a quality that exemplified rugged durability.
The brand itself sadly closed its doors in 2014. (At the time, it was the oldest continuously operating shoe store in the United States)
