Saint James is a city in Normandy, northern France.
The town's namesake, St. James, was founded in 1889, as is still engraved on its name tag.

In the mid-19th century, after the Industrial Revolution, spinning and dyeing yarn, which had previously been done by hand in ateliers, was industrialized by Leon Legare, who was the mayor of Saint-James at the time, and became part of the textile industry, which became the region's main industry. The high-quality wool obtained from sheep raised on the grass of the tidal flats of Mont Saint-Michel was used to produce marine sweaters, which were important work clothes for local fishermen and sailors, and became the prototype for the practical Saint-James shirts of today.

The business grew rapidly after the 20th century, and the company name was changed to the current TRICOT SAINT JAMES. Although the company further developed into marine sports and casual wear, the spirit of manufacturing using traditional methods has remained unchanged to the present day. In January 2005, the company received the EDC ETHIQUE & GOUVERNANCE, an award given to outstanding companies that are highly regarded as "companies that properly inherit traditions and convey the French spirit" and have contributed to society. In 2013, the company also received the EPV label, which is awarded to companies with outstanding craftsmanship and technology, a certification given to approximately 1,400 companies in France. The company has also attracted attention in the French business world.
