Over the course of his 70-year long career, O'Keeffe has painted almost exclusively themes of landscapes, flowers, and animal bones. Among them, the works that made O'Keeffe's name suddenly famous, depicting flowers enlarged to fill the screen, and the works depicting the skull of a cow with dignity like an icon are well known . In addition, he was one of the first painters to start painting abstract paintings in the United States (even from a global perspective ) . Throughout his life, he maintained an interest in abstraction.
O'Keeffe is one of the most famous American women painters of the 20th century.
During her 70-year career, O'Keeffe almost exclusively landscapes, flowers, and animal bones. Among her best-known works are the painted enlarged floral paintings that made O'Keeffe famous, and the majestic icon-like depictions of cow skulls. He was also one of the first American painters (and one of the first painters in the world) to begin abstract painting, and while he basically stuck to figurative motifs, he occasionally painted abstracts as well, and as a painter of the Precision School, he maintained a lifelong interest in abstraction.
