1906年、マサチューセッツ州のボストンでアーチサポートインソールや偏平足などを治す矯正靴の製造メーカーとして、ニューバランス社は誕生しました。
社名の由来は、履いた人に「新しい(New)バランス(Balance)」感覚をもたらすということによります。
足の解剖学的な知識、整形外科や運動生理学への深い理解があってこそ可能となる矯正靴の製造、その知識と経験がスニーカー作りにも生かされています。
このノウハウをもとに、1960年代にはカスタムメイドのランニングシューズの製造を開始します。
1976年に発表された「M320」でスニーカーの機能性が評価されるようになり、1985年に発表した「M1300」で、安定性とクッション性の高さが話題となり、ブランドの地位を確固たるものにしました。
伝統を継承しながらも、最新のテクノロジーを集結し、よりフィット性を追及するシューズ作りを行っています。
