미국의 야외 브랜드. 1968년, 캘리포니아의 버클리에서 설립했다. 「최저 몇번까지 견딜 수 있다」라고 하는 표시를 최초로 행한 브랜드로서도 유명하다. 설립 당시 미국 서해안은 히피 무브먼트의 메카였다. 문명을 떠나 백팩으로 방랑하는 히피들에게 있어서, 아웃도어 브랜드는 빠뜨릴 수 없는 아이템이 되어, 붐과 함께 더 노스 페이스의 인기도 젊은이들 사이에서 높아져 간다. 그 후도 쉐라 파커(다운 파커의 원형)나 돔형 텐트 등 혁신적인 아이템을 개발해, 현재도 「기능성 추구」의 스피릿은 계승되고 있다.
