These J.L. Coombs moccasins were once enthusiastically adopted by loggers and hunters working in the Maine forests, who discarded the stiff European-made wooden boots that were then prevalent.
Only vintage or deadstock (unused items from that era) can be found on the market today, and they are still sought after by American casual wear fans and vintage collectors worldwide as "phantom moccasins."
This current production faithfully reproduces the iconic ring moccasins by American artisans.
They are entirely handmade using genuine moccasin stitching and 5mm cowhide, which is difficult to obtain today.

Founded in 1830 in Maine, USA, J.L. Coombs is known as a pioneering brand that was the first in the world to commercialize the traditional moccasin shoe-making method used by Native Americans.
They used extremely thick elk leather and cowhide, sometimes up to 5mm thick, and every step, from cutting to hammering and sewing, was completed by skilled artisans by hand.
Committed to traditional manufacturing methods, their quality was so robust and honest that there's even an anecdote that they once soaked the leather in "bear oil" to enhance its water resistance.
The brand itself sadly closed its doors in 2014. (At the time, it was the oldest continuously operating shoe store in the United States.)
