Saint James is a city in Normandy, northern France.
Saint James, the company named after the town, was founded in 1889, as is still engraved on its name tag.
In the mid-19th century, after the Industrial Revolution, spinning and dyeing, which had previously been done by hand in ateliers, were industrialized by Léon Legare, the mayor of Saint-James at the time, and this established part of the textile industry, which would become a major industry in the region. The high-quality wool obtained from sheep raised on the grass of the Mont Saint-Michel tidal flats gave rise to marine sweaters, which were important workwear for local fishermen and sailors, and became the prototype for the practical Saint-James shirts of today.
The business continued to grow rapidly into the 20th century, and the company name was changed to the current 'TRICOT SAINT JAMES'. While the company further expanded into marine sports and casual wear, its spirit of craftsmanship using traditional methods remains unchanged to this day. In January 2005, the company received the EDC ETHIQUE & GOUVERNANCE, an award given to outstanding companies that have contributed to society and are highly regarded for "properly carrying on tradition and conveying the French spirit." In 2013, the company also received the EPV label, a designation given to approximately 1,400 companies in France that recognizes companies with outstanding craftsmanship and technology. The company has become a prominent presence in the French business community.
